Bitter Is The New Black

As I said I know a lot of you have read this book but if you have not I am begging you to pick it up!

Book Description
"Jen Lancaster was living the sweet life-until real life kicked her to the curb.

She had the perfect man, the perfect job-hell, she had the perfect life-and there was no reason to think it wouldn't last. Or maybe there was, but Jen Lancaster was too busy being manicured, pedicured, highlighted, and generally adored to notice.

This is the smart-mouthed, soul-searching story of a woman trying to figure out what happens next when she's gone from six figures to unemployment checks and she stops to reconsider some of the less-than-rosy attitudes and values she thought she'd never have to answer for when times were good.

Filled with caustic wit and unusual insight, it's a rollicking read as speedy and unpredictable as the trajectory of a burst balloon."

From Publishers Weekly

It doesn't take Lancaster long to live up to her lengthy subtitle ("Confessions of a Condescending, Egomaniacal, Self-Centered Smart-Ass, or Why You Should Never Carry a Prada Bag to the Unemployment Office"): in just one chapter, she gloats over cheating a homeless man, is rude to a waitress and passes judgment on all of her co-workers (including her "whore" best friend). She's almost gleeful about lacking "the internal firewall that keeps us from saying almost everything we think," but she doesn't come off as straightforward, just malicious. (Of course, it's possible she's making up much of her dialogue, which is a little too clever to be believable.) Lancaster expects sympathy for her downward slide after getting fired from her high-paying finance job in the post-9/11 recession, and chick lit fans may be entertained watching life imitate fiction, but just when you start to feel sorry for her, the snotty attitude returns. In later chapters, Lancaster increasingly relies on entries from her blog (www.jennsylvania. com) and caustic replies to criticisms, and though things start looking up—her husband finds a job, she lands a book deal—it's not clear that she's been as chastised by her experiences as she claims. All in all i super funny, good light hearted read!

She's funny, smart and of course preppy! AND SHE BLOGS!!!!
Jen Lancaster

Blogging Mode...not so much

I have a lot to fill you in on (not really), but no time. The snow is making people in my office crazy and well that leaves no time for blogging! Grrr...

I do however only have 50 pages left of Bitter is the New Black. I couldn't put it down this weekend. Well the fact it's a great book and I was sick and didn't get out of bed most of Saturday night. WHAT A WASTE...

You were all right, it is very very funny and Jen Lancaster is something else! I also can't wait for her new book to come out. I also added her as a myspace friend over the weekend :)! I love that i found her myspace so i know what her dogs and Fletch look like, makes it a bit more real.

OH, had a Dr appt with the foot guy, and what a smarty pants, though he's booted me for at least another month or so, on and off for different days at least. Sweet!

Lent

So this is what I gave up for Lent...

Pizza and diet coke... the first one will be pretty easy, late night is the only time I EVER eat it. But still it will be hard when it gets to that point.

The diet coke is/was the hard one. And yes this morning without even thinking about it I ordered a diet coke took a sip and said ohh crap...So here's my question, do I A) Say screw it and wait until next year or B) hop back on the Catholic wagon?

One more thing...where the pictures of Britney not freakishly scary? Grrrrr

small head...small ears....

Mrs P. over at PreppyChic blogged about Thin Headbands last week and after playing around with the headbands I have at home I've discovered I have a small head.

With that comes small ears...for the life of me I can not keep the iPod earpieces in my ear. Not even when I'm sitting still. I had to put this rubber ear thingys on them and that is the ONLY way they would stay. So now they are broken and I'm due for another pair.

Next comes what to monogram on my towels for our second bathroom. They have them on sale at Pottery Barn, a set of three for $11.99. The picture shows them monogrammed with "guest" I kind of like that idea but am trying to be a tad more clever.

We were going to go to the Cape this weekend to get away but something came up and we're city bound. This weekend is key to find something fun to do. The winter is starting to take a toll on me. I'm sick of it...freaking sick of it.

Anywho, after work I'm heading to Beacon Hill to meet up with Music Guy's sister and our friend Kate. Hopefully get our nails done and hang out on this sunny cold afternoon.

I got the book Bitter is the new Black in the mail today, i am SUPER excited to start reading it!

Oh and are Crystal Light on the go packs not one of the best things going?

Have a great weekend ya'll!

Cookies

Chloe blogged about making brownies and I think I'm going to make some cookies tonight. Along with some hard boiled eggs! Good combo! No?!
Not really planning on eating the cookies, I just want to make them.

The dresses below are from Priscilla of Boston a bit of my price range, but are so classy!

Got back to working out today, the hoof is doing alright. But it is sore, so I didn't do a full workout. But every little bit helps!!!

Off to the store and then home!

Happy Ash Wednesday!

A few wedding things

I found a few dresses I thought were cute, though the price was not anywhere to be found so it looks like I'm doing a little dreaming!

I really like this dress, but i would like the top of it to be straight across! Also I don't like the "longer" top part of it. Maybe I don't like this dress.

This is cute, I don't like the brown sash and the color of the navy, but do like the dress style. I am going back and forth between the color dress. Navy with a light blue sash, or the other way around. I will have to talk to my girls and see what their thoughts are. Good thing Music Guy gave me so much time!

I work in Pink and Green

I was creating an excel spreadsheet for work and I had to color code it for the different Quarters...So of course Q2 and Q3 are pink and green as those two quarters are Spring and Summer. Is that odd? Q1 and Q4 didn't get the love, I must be coming off a long weekend!

That being said, I have a this leather holder that I keep paperclips in and yes you guessed it they are all pink and green clips. And the thumb tacks that I have on my board are also pink and green. I will say that project was done while was on a conference call that was running more than an hour over and it was all I could do to not hang up.

If I'm going to spend as much time at the office as I do I need it to be very Kimba!

Yes, I'm losing it!

Now that I'm talking about work it's time I bring up the change I am making myself do while on the bus to and from work.

I've been known to look at TMZ or People and also blogs on my Blackberry while riding to work. I was looking around a few weeks ago and thought ok this is pathetic everyone around me is either reading the paper or reading a book. I do read magazines from time to time, but my commute is only 15-20 minutes and there is a lot of moving around and I feel reading a book would be pointless. Nonetheless, as you know I've recently purchased two new books and I am going to make myself start to read while on the bus.
At least I'm not as bad as some people who do nothing but stare at others or look out the windwo and not make a move.

I think that's enought work talk for one post!

Pres Weekend Update

If you're like me in the Northeast you're probably not at work today!

We had a great weekend with my dad! Friday we hung out at home and caught up did some wedding chat and headed to the Warren Tavern for dinner. It was way to cold to venture out very far. I had boiled Haddock and it was SO good, they have really great food.

Saturday we headed to the Samuel Adams Brewery in JP for a tour. It was ok what I was expecting, it was all about marketing and getting you to buy their beer. Nonetheless we had a good time, free beer is always a perk.

We headed back to Charlestown to grab lunch. I had wanted to go to the Tavern on the Water but they were not open yet, I thought lets go to Ironside, nope not open either. So it was back to the Warren Tavern, which was a great call we got a good table and had the best burgers.

Music Guy's parents came over to meet my father and we had dinner. It was a very nice time.

My dad's trip was very short, so we didn't go around and tour very many Boston "things". He and my stepmom come out about once a year so they've had their fill of, Freedom and trolley tours. This summer they're coming back to spend a long weekend and go to the Cape to see the wedding details.

Sunday evening we were back in Beacon Hill and let me tell you I do NOT miss it whatsoever. Of course it's a wonderful spot, but to crowed for me. I am enjoying our place more than i ever thought.

Yesterday I spent most of the day cleaning and catching up on laundry. AND I was able to watch all of my DVR'd One Tree Hills, it was great, I think I got about 10 out of the way. Funny how cleaning and listening to Brooke and Rachel being Clean Teens can keep one tuned in!

Lot more happened this weekend but it's such a lazy day and blogging has taken a backseat! I am enjoying seeing what you all have to say!

Is the ice in Boston not CRAZY????

Good day mate

No time to blog today, my father is flying in this afternoon and I'm trying like heck to get out of here to meet him at the airport!

That being said, I got myself a little treat at Starbucks this morning. Venti Skim Latte, the wonderful guy behind the counter asked if I would like to try a free shot, being Kimba I said "What does that mean" (said with a slight tilt of my head)...He said I'll give you the third shot of espresso free. "Free" you got it!!! Who would pass up something free, at Starbucks to less. I've had two sips and I think this is going to be a good day...I'll have NO problem getting my work done and out of here on time! This stuff is rocket fuel!

Giddy up!

Hope you guys have a great weekend, I'll be checking in at some point! :)

Valentines Day is in full swing at the Kimba house

It sure is...

Waking up to the lovely sleek smacking against the house as the wind is whipping through the windows. Awww the love of winter.

I get up to my blackberry buzzing non stop to only find a few of my colleagues are trying to figure out if it is ok to "work from home". I reply back that I'm about to hobble on the bus with my booty and all, so spare me.

Back to why it's all Valentines Day all the time today... As I'm getting ready Music Guy comes upstairs and is talking about the snow/sleet and I snap back that I hope I don't fall of the bus when I get to work. He says I hope you don't either...I walk out of the bathroom and in the same snappy voice say "Happy Valentines Day"...and I look up and on our dresser is a bouquet of flowers in this super chic vase and a card. Who felt like a heel now!?

He had the flowers delivered yesterday and hid them so he'd be the first one to wish me Valentines Day. And then went on and said, Your dad is sending you.....opps.... HA. My father always sends me something at work. I thought he only did it when I was single but has kept it up over the last 3 years! I have a feeling this might be the last year, but it's such a sweet thought. We have not always been the closest so it's NOT a daddy's little girl thing, because I am in no way a "daddy's little girl".

So now I'm up to bat, I have to head out and make sure i do something wonderful for my guy as he already made it perfect for me!

Making dinner is out..we're getting take out.
Sweet treats are out...he hates sweets.

So I have my thinking cap on!

Hope you guys have a wonderful day, some of you love it some of you hate it. But all in all it's a good Hallmark holiday. I've already sent a bunch of ecards (hey they're free!)

A few book choices

I enjoy reading as much as the next person, but I'm not very good at being able to sit down and read a book. I am a bit of a restless person and well reading one thing is just not my forte. But I see so many books I would love to read and never do. So here are two i just bought! Have any of you read either one of them?

I do however have NO problem reading about 50 magazines a day. Which brings me to something that ticked me off last night. I do have about 23395485 magazines at home I have yet to read, but they aren't my favs so putting them off and buying more is just fine in my eyes. So I went to CVS and thought I'll pick up "Shape" it looked like a good one and I didn't have any i really wanted to read at home so got it. I then came home to I kid you not 10 magazines falling out of our mailbox. And they were ones I'd rather read. Grrr...at least I didn't buy one that was sitting at home like one of our lovely bloggers had done before, which I have done more than once. Having two different covers for the same month is wrong...

Hope these books get here fast before i lose interest!
Rome Wasn't Burnt in a Day: The Real Deal on How Politicians, Bureaucrats, and Other Washington Barbarians Are Bankrupting America (Joe Scarborough)

Monday fun!

I have a Cape plate now, love it!

My plate in High School was "Kimba 1"

Awww, clearly Music Guy is from the Motor City!

Get your own plate!

Sexy back?

Big hugs to our girl Chloe for sexing up my blog. She is something else isn't she? Very "Kimba"!

I've tried for lets say oh months to figure out how to add color and make it all preppy and fun. The time i tried i erased my whole blogroll and it was a pain in the buns trying to add it again. I've yet to figure out how to get it A-Z. But that's another day!

Hope you like it, I sure LOVE it! Thanks C :)

Dixie this

How on Gods green earth did the Chicks win 5 yes 5 Grammys? Don't get my wrong I like their music but they did not deserve: Album of the Year, Record of the Year and Song of the Year. Not Album of the Year or Record of the Year for damn sure.

I think (and we all know Kimba thinks shes always right) that James Blunt should have won for "You're Beautiful" and the Red Hot Chili Peppers should have won for their record Stadium Arcadium. No if and or buts. Grrr I am really fired up about this, living with someone who's blog would be "All Things Music" I know my stuff, and for the Chicks to get those Grammys is completely wrong. And it has NOTHING to do with the fact I vote right. Opps, i might have lost some readers!

Now that I have that out of the way, it's on to more ANS news...TMZ has to be one of the best places for up to date celebrity gossip, It quickly got bookmarked.

Weekend Update: A good weekend over all, it was nice when it warmed up a tad and the wind died down. Friday night we stayed in and worked on a few wedding items, not for us for Music Guy's sister and something for friends of our who have gotten married. I won't tell you what it is now as Fav Couple read my blog and it's for them. I watched a lot of ANS news on Friday and was in bed early!

Saturday I cleaned the heck out of our place, and I mean heck. I was on hands and keens scrubbing the bathroom floor which was difficult with my booty on smacking into things. Leg booty that is. Music Guy went to the Back Bay to do some shopping (what's wrong with this picture) more or less to get out of Charlestown and probably get away from his annoying Fiancee. Hehe! That evening his sister and her Fiancee came over and we all went out to the Warren Tavern to get some dinner and lots o beers. We met up with our friend Kate, Hick, the soon to be Mrs Hick and a couple they're friends with. We had a whole section to ourselves, which I think our waitress was not happy about. Then it ended up being a late night party over at the Kimba Music Guy crib, nothing beats iTunes past 11:30pm sorry Zach and Sarah the couple downstairs. Well his name isn't really "Zach" it's Jeff but we call him Zach because of the Ben Folds Five song. Yes I know "odd".

Moving on to Sunday Kate slept over so Music Guy was so kind and made us breakfast. I then took her home to JP and good god let me tell you, it's a freaking hike. I was thinking wow this should not take this long. But I hated to see her take the T, I'm a good friend like that!

That was pretty much it for the day, wish i would have gotten out more but i can't walk all to well. Then it was time to make dinner and watch the Grammys. We made steak and french fries, yep i said it french fries and they were YUM-O. I made bernaise sauce and it was a wonderful dinner. I am in love with our grill. Just absolutely in love!

Speaking of "in love", it came out this weekend that I have a super HUGE cruch on Joe Scarborough. Music Guy was beside himself when I told him, he is like are you kidding me he's "Old Balls". Oh well, he's on my list along with Ed Hochuli! So tell me who's your "odd" man crush. Below are my two guys!!!

WOW...

Hi Ed!

So much to blog about

WOW where does one start.

I am all over the Anna Nicole Smith death, i sickly can not get enough of it. I left work and spent the majority of my evening flipping back and forth trying to get the most coverage I could. Once 7pm rolled around it was non stop Extra, ET, Access, Insider. Though Extra and ET had the most coverage as they had the final interview. Which was scary to see her knowing she was the mother of a 5 month old. She was definitely on something. Swaying back and forth you could barley hear what she was saying, what a wreck. Most of her life (that i can remember) was a train wreck, all messed up and out there and we (I) could not once look away. Music Guy said it best last night, she'll be bigger in death than she was alive. Well something to that degree.

CNN BREAKING NEWS
-- A Los Angeles judge orders the body of Anna Nicole Smith to be preserved pending a February 20 hearing on the paternity dispute surrounding her five-month-old daughter, lawyer says.

Breaking news mid-blogging.

Wonder if they'll then freeze her like they did Ted Williams to hopefully clone her?

In happier news, it just wouldn't be a week if I didn't blog about English Tea Paperie! As I've blogged about before Chloe had made the invites to my girlfriends engagement party. I got them a few weeks ago and they are perfect! She got 40 of them together in NO time, and they looked like I spent $100's with the ribbon, and as we know C's prices are very reasonable.

I also ordered address labels that C personalized with hydrangeas, they are so lovely!

Big hugs to Chloe for her impeccable work!

WEEKEND...

Not much to report for the upcoming weekend. I'm planning on taking it easy and letting my foot rest. I sure hope I can do it, but something tells me I'll HAVE to run to Target for "something". Lord knows it wouldn't be a weekend if I didn't convince myself I need to shop!

THIS IS NUTS

Anna Nicole Smith dies

(CNN) -- Reality TV star and former model Anna Nicole Smith was pronounced dead Thursday after being taken to a Florida hospital after being found unconscious in her hotel room, a law enforcement source with knowledge of the case told CNN.
Smith, 39, collapsed at a south Florida hotel and was taken to a local hospital, according to news reports.

WOW, that is all i can say. With everything going on with her, i am not a bit surprised, i mean yes I'm surprised but it's not shocking.

That is pretty sad.

Meet my booty

Little slower than normal

Thank you guys for your well wishes, I'm just going to lay low for a while and let this puppy heal. That should be fun, i can't sit still for a second let alone have a weekend pass by. It'll be good for me to see if I can do it, though with Music Guy i don't have a choice.

I'm kind of sick of the same weather, cold cold cold. But at least it's not snowing, but if it does I'm wearing a "ski" boot so should be fine!

I had a little scare yesterday/today. Music Guy's sisters bridesmaid dresses got delivered to all the other girls but myself. It occurred to me they have my old address. I called and emailed them in a panic, and when I heard back from them they said it had shipped a few weeks ago and they were trying to track it. I thought I was freaking out before! Finally they called and said the person at my old place returned it to them this morning. And then said don't worry we would never tell the bride. Which I had to laugh, god bless those people who work with brides for a living! So all is well, dress should be to me by Monday!

Crazy busy day at work, I just wanted to drop in and saw howdy! I think I need to hobble to get a diet coke!

Wednesday, February 07, 2007

I sure did it

I sprained my Achilles tendon! And now I'm sporting a nifty boot!!!! It's suppose to be on for a few weeks. Or until it's better. I am going to be SO good to it, so i can get out of the booty.

My appointment was in Beacon Hill so i hobbled into a cab and decided to just head home. I hated the thought of taking the bus home after work and I have a really long day tomorrow so I'll just go in early!

I'll have to take a picture of my foot.

Hope you guys are having a good week!

ouuchhh

So I think I over did it at the gym/walking last week. And why I think that is because i strained my Achilles Tendon. It KILLS, i hobble around my house and now am wearing shoes that make me feel a nun would run after me to get her shoes back. I've been popping pills and it seems to help, I'm going to do some upper body workout at home with my "Shape" DVDs. At least it's something!

So with the brutal cold and my bum foot I've been taking the bus, but hoping to get back to walking SOON!

I'm sure a lot of you have noticed that E over at Suburban Cupcake is taking a little blogging break (cross fingers it's only a little break) and it also seems E over at Pink and Green Girl might follow suit (again fingers double crossed). And I completely support what ever they choose to do, of course I'll miss the updates and humor of their writing, but life gets crazy and to stress over what to blog about is just not fun. Not saying that's what happened just saying!

***24 talk*** if you didn't see last night's episode do NOT read on.

I was very disappointed with 24 last night. Were there way more commercials than normal, what was the deal? Oh and they wouldn't assume Jack's dad killed his brother right at the end after having time alone with him, regardless of what happened. Phhhleeesss. But I can't get to upset about it, next week is a 2 hour show which means there should be a twist, someone will die someone new will come on and then it's off to more Jack drama!

***Studio 60 talk***
I was on the other hand super pleased with Studio 60! I am VERY happy to have Danny and Jordan finally get together. They are extremely witty people and the two of them will have some good scenes together. I wish they'd get the darn animals out of the floor and start shooting! What else happened, oh more Matt and Harriet drama. It will be neat to see next week when they first met and started dating. I like the flash backs, they use to do that all the time on the West Wing. (Thanks Music Guy)

Hope you guys are staying warm. On CNN last night they were reporting live from my home town (Madison, WI) the coldest place in the country! My poor mother! But it's pretty cold here too! Bundle up my friends!

Shopping edit

Ok i'm going with the Green Blazer, my mom said the white one looked like a DR coat. HA. Thanks for all your input, i enjoyed knowing what color you liked!

I'm home from work and not going out ANY more tonight. Too freaking cold! I just wanted to stop in and assure you all i wasn't going with the not so popular white!

Brrrr

Yikes, it' super cold here in the NorthEast, but not as bad as Wisconsin! My poor mother broke her finger last weekend and had to be holed up all this weekend.
She did however say she wanted to get me the vv blazer for an early birthday gift. And I think I'm going to go with the white. I just think I get get so much more use out of it. I know i really want the green one!

We had a great BUSY weekend. It was non-stop, we haven't had a weekend like this in ages!

Friday after work I had to run to JCrew to return something and then i got sidetracked at a jewelry store. I think i am going to change my setting, i know i know make up your darn mind. But i truly know what i want and i should just get it and stop thinking about it.

I got home after JCrew got ready for dinner with Music Guy's parents, sister her fiancee and their two family friends who were in town from Grosse Pointe, MI. We had a nice low key dinner at The Hill Tavern in Beacon Hill. And headed over to HG (Harvard Gardens) for a few drinks. We left fairly early as we knew we had a BIG day a head of us!

Saturday I got up and met the dinner crew for brunch at Jury's. The bar Cuff's in the hotel is a really cute chic bar and they have great food. Then it was off to Bella Santa for what I thought was going to be a wonderful Mani and Pedi, good god i was wrong. I have had better work done for a whole lot less. It cost $90 for just that of course the tip. I was so livid when i left. Music Guy's mom and sister got facials. I was going to do that but I've never had one before I did want my face to breakout or have any issues. I was SO wrong.
But anyways, I'm happy we had the time together.

That evening was their engagement party (hence family in town and spa day). Music Guy had to work so he was coming late, I got a ride with his parents so we of course had to get their early so all day I felt I just ran around. But it was fun!

Music Guy works in the music business (shocker) and the label he works for had a big up and coming star in town to promote his CD and he had a show at The Paradise Saturday night. They had an event before the show he had to be at and then left Boston drove out to Dover to the party, was there for a couple hours and then we went back so we could watch the show and they had another event after. So we didn't get home until after 12:30am and he had left at 4:00pm so it was a long day and night. I was laughing that when I woke up on Sunday. I had a big black stamp on my hand and a wrist band, yikes, it's been a few years since that's happened! The show was off the charts, I super love the singer as well as live music!

Sunday was spent getting our place clean and getting the menu all set for our Super Bowl "party"! We had a few couples over for the game and it was a blast. The food was wonderful! I'll blog about that later!

I have two loyal readers on vacation this week, so i'll have to try my best to keep everyone else entertained!

I do heart ALL THINGS JCREW!

This makes me want to jump on a boat!

I've super in love with the Madras, though I feel it wouldn't be very "slimming"!

What's a Kimba to do

Do we like the pink?

Or the green?

Or do we like the white?
Come on my preppy ladies what color should I go with for the vv Cohasset Cord Blazer? I really like the green and white. But maybe green? Or would I get more use out of the white

Quick update

As we all know the whole thing in Boston yesterday was a PR move. Very upsetting but at least we're all ok. I could go on and on about what i think but i have way too much going on to tell you all that one of the most educated cities made itself look ridiculous. But i don't mind looking ridiculous if that means we're doing all we can to be safe.

Heading out tonight with some wonderful ladies, one of which is a gal we all know so well, A of fav couple. Super packed weekend a head. Trying to get things out of the way to make it a bit less stressful. Yeah right!

I've been walking to work and it is one of the best feelings. I use to walk everyday for a year and then all of a sudden I moved and took the bus. After figuring out walking was only a about 10 minutes slower i said screw it and laced up my tennies and have enjoyed the walk in the freezing cold more than any one person should!

Hope you guys are having a good week. I wish i had some wedding updates, but frankly i have none! But hope to soon!
